This final RCC Forum for Spring takes place at noon on Sunday June 13th 2010 at the Roslindale Congregational Church. Lunch is provided. There is no charge, but a free-will offering will help defray costs.

Having traveled in both Israel and Palestine, the Rev. Branwen L. Cook brings an in-depth perspective on the situation there, as well as an opportunity for possible travel. Fair Trade Mavens will display Palestinian made hand crafts, proceeds of which go directly to the artisans. A fair trade Palestinian olive oil will also be on sale.

The Last Survivor screening, April 25th 2010

The Last Survivor will be screened at the Somerville Theater as part of the Independent Film festival on April 25th 2010, starting at 2:15pm. It will be followed by a Q & A session with director Michael Pertnoy and film characters Sasha Chanoff and Justin Semahora Kimenyerwa.

The Last Survivor is an award-winning documentary that presents the stories of four unforgettable individuals who struggle to make sense of tragedy following the lives of survivors of the Holocaust in Rwanda, Darfur and the Congo.

2010 Spring events included presentations on “Bearing Witness to the Shoah: One Man’s Holocaust Remembrances’ by John Rolfe, “The Promised Land: Another View” by Rev. Branwen L. Cook & Marjorie Suisman and “Tenacity: Tennis and Literacy in the City of Boston” by Ned Eames.

The RCC Forum will recommence in the fall.

Haitian Cultural Arts Fundraiser February 21, 2010

SUCCESS OF HAITIAN CULTURAL ARTS FUNDRAISER

On Sunday, Feb. 21st, the Roslindale Congregational Church, RI Teen Institute, Bethesda- Haiti, & Haitian Family Organization teamed with local artists, restaurants and educators to launch a cultural arts fundraiser. The show included poetry, music, dance and art, with traditional snack foods, and a presentation by a professor from Wheelock College.

Admission was free, with 100% of donations going directly to Haiti relief through Church World Service. The total donations exceeded $600.

Message from Pastor Cook on Ash Wednesday and Lent

Ash Wednesday Services February 17 Noon and 7:30 PM

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten Season, the most holy time of the Christian year. During this time we recall and contemplate the final journey of Jesus in his life as itinerant preacher and healer. The metaphorical journey that his followers have taken is often marked by a number of symbolic acts, such as placing ashes on the forehead as a reminder of our humanity. Traditionally the phrase, “From dust you come, to dust you shall return,” accompanies the physical sign of the cross as it is placed on the forehead. The idea of “giving up” something one likes during the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter is deeply ingrained, as well.

Certainly such rituals have meaning, but the context is equally important. If you choose to forgo something for Lent, it is important to realize this is simply a reminder of the nature of sacrifice in the life of the spirit’s journey. In our modern age, it may be more helpful to “give up” an hour or two of time to a good cause or to the study and consideration of one’s purpose in life.

To this end we will be offering an opportunity to meet weekly, pray daily, and be a part of a small group experience at the church. The start date will be announced. You may contact the pastor for more information.

The fight for health care reform is not over! Realizing a final health care bill will mark an historic achievement that will transform the lives of many Americans who are without access to quality, affordable health care.

The past week has been tumultuous in Washington D.C. The election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts has altered the political balance of the Senate, a change which presents new obstacles for proponents of healthcare reform.

Our mission must remain the same – to continue the advocate for reform that embraces and responds to our moral vision for our health care future.

The need for prayer and action continues. Take Action to day!

Call your elected officials and encourage them to move forward with health care reform. Use our script and ask them to support real health care reform that embraces the moral vision of a system that is inclusive, accessible, affordable, and accountable.

How You Can Help the Victims of the Haitian Earthquake

The incredible devastation in Haiti is on everyone’s minds. The UCC, of which Roslindale Congregational is a member, has put together a coordinated effort to help.

United Church of Christ responds to earthquake in Haiti

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Psalms 46:1-3 (NRSV)

Let our prayers and generosity mount in response to the emerging news of Haiti’s devastation from a 7.0 earthquake late yesterday afternoon. The UCC has a strong presence in Haiti, with two missionaries – Kimberly and Patrick Bentrott. Visit the UCC website to read some of their reports from the past several months.

Many of our churches are or have been actively engaged in Haiti, carrying out a variety of mission projects.

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS: 100% of all donations will be used to directly help the disaster victims. We are able to do this because of Our Church’s Wider Mission Basic Support.

Write check payable to MACUCC and mark in the memo portion “OGHS – Haitian Relief”. Mail to the Conference office: MACUCC, 1 Badger Road, Framingham, MA 01702.
